THE CATHODE RAY: New download single BUCK THE TREND
Buck the Trend is the second single to be lifted from the band’s highly acclaimed latest album Infinite Variety, which came out recently on Stereogram Recordings.
Singled out by critics as just one of many standout tracks on the album, Buck the Trend is part German motorik, part L.A. Woman, part Art Rock. If Talking Heads or Television had relocated to Berlin in 1978, they might have sounded something like this…
The excellent Buck the Trend is a song with a healthy breath of Tom Verlaine and Television to it. Keys and guitar spin a gorgeous eighties web for the rhythmic and vocal prowess of the song to pull this way and that, a combination sculpting another major highlight in the album. In the middle section of the album, Buck the Trend merges pulsating Krautrock electronica with jittering, funky Talking Heads guitars. A hyper Thoms advises, “Make a mess of everything/Go ahead and buck the trend/Try a little imperfection/Go ahead and buck the trend. PENNY BLACK MUSIC
The whirring clockwork chime of Buck the Trend introduces a welcome foray into Stranglers-esque prog-pop. Indeed, it’s easy to detect a Hugh Cornwell influence in the almost Beefheartian, atonal guitar bleats that provide a counter-point to the album’s pervasive sense of melody. LOUDER THAN WAR
Anyone looking for the wired post punk guitars of the first record will still find them in abundance. Single Resist owes as much to 70s Wire as to any New York influence whilst Buck the Trend ploughs a similar furrow but adds a playful organ as the song picks up pace. ‘Buck the Trend’ would be one obvious choice as a follow-up single. Much of the fun of Infinite Variety is to be had from identifying the echoes of song structures and sounds from fondly recalled discs of yesteryear: here a nod to XTC, there a soupcon of Elvis Costello And The Attractions. The Vox Continental organ that sweeps into the jerky joy of Buck the Trend is a fine example. It is also rich in the clever word-play of Thoms’ lyrics. ROY MOLLER: New Download Single ANOTHER MAN’S GOD
The new single from Roy Moller follows his two critically acclaimed 2014, albums on Stereogram, One Domino and My Week Beats Your Year, The latter, a tribute to Lou Reed, was described a 'profoundly moving and inspirational' by Gus Ironside in his five-star Louder Than War review.
Written with occasional collaborator Stevie Jackson (Belle and Sebastian), Another Man’s God first featured live in the studio on Moller’s BBC 6Music session for Marc Riley where Riley famously described Moller as 'Scotland’s best-kept secret.'
Also a member of Jesus, Baby! fronted by Davy Henderson (Fire Engines/Sexual Objects), Edinburgh-born Moller has five solo albums, and a debut collection of poetry - Imports published by Appletree Writers’ Press, to his credit.
Another Man’s God, as recorded by Moller in his hometown of Dunbar, combines skittering, rhythms, barbed lyrics and jagged guitar. Imagine a finesse-shredding Tom Verlaine gate-crashing the Bowie/Eno sessions for Earthling.

A diverse LP from the acoustic strum of LP opener Capital City to the squalling guitars and celebratory organ of Captivity through the horn section on Under The Radar. As with One Domino what pulls the different elements together is Moller’s insistent melodic sense.

Shine, which is due for release July 31, is a collection of brand new songs exploring the theme of light, shade and survival, through what the album producer, and renowned folk musician in his own right, Reg Meuross describes as Jess’s ‘magical voice and exceptional and truly innovative songwriting talent’.
It’s not easy to stand out in today’s music industry, but Jess has a highly original style has been noticed: “Soulful, strong and utterly engrossing” says Mick Tems, Folk Wales, and “uniquely and obliquely original” Rock’n’Reel R2.
There are some fascinating female characters in these songs: ‘Billy Tipton’s Waltz’ tells the tale of a jazz musician in the 1930s who spent her entire life posing as a man, in order to be treated as an equal amongst her male counterparts. ‘New Amsterdam’ tells the ghostly tale of Olive Thomas lived a wild life and now haunts the New Amsterdam Theatre. She had managed to control everything around her through her womanly wiles and when she died the New Amsterdam went into ruins with her. ‘Charley’s Song’ was inspired by a friend of Jess’s who is an officer in the army.
Alongside these characters, Jess also brings us some more personal revelations ‘Wrong Shade of Blue’ and country style heartbreak ‘Shackles and Chains’, and tales of love, shining against the odds.
Jess delivers her songs with a unique and gorgeous voice, and subtle arrangements on guitar, baritone uke & shruti box, revealing a maturity that belies her youth, yet allowing her vulnerability to shine through.
