Corbu
Debut album Crayon Soul released 5th August 2016 via 3Beat

www.corbucorbu.com

Crayon Soul is debut album from New York based modern psychedelic band Corbu. Produced by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Tame Impala). It’s modern because instead of referencing classic rock of the 60s and 70s, they take their psychedelic inspiration from Warp Records acts like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Boards of Canada. Corbu are Jonathan Graves, who writes, sings, plays instruments and designs artwork; and Amanda, who writes and plays synths.

Woozy, dreamlike psychedelia is a defining feature of the music that Corbu now make together, but it’s also informed by the artists the pair have grown into later in life like Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and In Rainbows-era Radiohead. Once Jonathan and Amanda began collaborating and writing songs together, Corbu became a way for them to use the music they love to tap into their collective unconscious. Their resulting debut album, Crayon Soul, is a record about finding your way back to a childlike and joyous mental state.

The last song to be written for Crayon Soul was ‘Battles’, a song about the fight to be creative.  “It's about the struggles of trying to go against the grain in anything in life, but I always wanted it to be really joyful," says Jonathan. “It’s about battles, but we wanted there to be a feeling that you're sort of winning."

While writing the album, Jonathan and Amanda always only had one name in mind for the person they wanted to mix it: Dave Fridmann. Having made his name working with artists like The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev, they knew he was the one person who would understand the aesthetic that they wanted Crayon Soul to have – and they personally contacted him to invite him to be a part of the project.

With Fridmann’s help, Corbu have succeeded in their ambition to create a truly immersive record. Crayon Soul is a thoroughly modern psychedelic record, but more than that, it’s a journey through space and sound back to our own collective childhoods.

Treading a similar path to Katie Melua, Georgian singer/songwriter Salio, has also been causing quite a stir with her soulful debut single ‘Wayside’ taken from her debut EP ‘Lost World’ released July 1st. The video for ‘Wayside’ premiered on The Telegraph and received very positive feedback throughout the country. The title track of the EP ‘Lost World’ is about growing up in a repressive place that offers little opportunity for a bright future.

Salio was spotted at the Black Sea Festival in the Republic of Georgia by producer Quint Davis, who organizes the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He was so blown away by her performance that he invited her to perform at the festival. Once there, she wowed audiences of thousands and sang with jazz and gospel greats. Shortly afterwards, Salio was invited to perform at the Blue Note in New York, where she again received a standing ovation.

She won her first singing competition at the age of six, wrote her first song when she was 11, and was convinced that her singing talents would help her escape the awful poverty she was experiencing.

The 2nd single taken from the highly anticipated debut album ‘Never’ is the big production number ‘My Ship’  -  A Bondesque power ballad that would fit perfectly into any 007 franchise where Welsh-songstress FFI would sit snugly alongside her fellow countrywomen Shirley Bassey.

To celebrate the release, Ffi and her incredible band of musicians, will be performing at London’s Venue 229 on 28th September which promises to be a gig NOT TO BE MISSED! The debut album features a stellar cast of musicians like no other, with guys who have graced the stage and studio with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello, Paulo Nutini, Barbara Streisand , Robbie Williams, Jamiroquai, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles and Sir Tom Jones, to name but a few.

The first single ‘Take It Or leave It’ has been gracing UK and international airwaves for the past couple of months proving to be a real DJ and listener favourite. Other tracks from the album have been picked up by Jazz stations across the globe showing Ffi’s diversity and popularity amongst serious music lovers.
Born in Cardiff and adopted at 3 months old, Ffi was introduced to the piano at the age of 5 by her mother. Quickly learning to play by ear, she began writing her first songs at a very early age. Realising her obvious natural gift, her parents enrolled her in formal lessons and she was classically trained on both the piano and violin. She then progressed on to the saxophone and then the drums at the age of 10.

Despite having all this talent, Ffi was still essentially a grounded welsh tomboy. Wanting to find her voice she sang in chapel and at school, only to be told to sing quieter because her vice was so loud and deep! Thankfully, this never put her off and she took to singing just like all the other instruments presented to her.

At 14, she got a part on a Welsh TV drama and pursued a successful acting career appearing in a variety of dramas on TV and stage before progressing on to national and beyond. Her screen CV boasts playing the daughter of the late, great Philip Madoc in the hugely popular ‘A Mind To Kill’, along with roles in ‘Doctors’ and ‘Torchwood’.

Whilst being an actress, she continued to study her first love, music and went to Goldsmith’s College, University of London, and it was there that she started to work and perform with some of the biggest names in the business.

BIO
Starseedz new single is quite simply an amazing song. Not often do songs like these come along. 'Miss U' was selected by
the FRESH ON THE NET team as a fresh fave some months ago and you can hear why.
This in turn led to radio play on BBC RADIO 6, Amazing Radio to name a few.

Recently signed to End of The Trail Records the duo from St Albans are surely just beginning a great run of singles if this one is anything to judge them by. Indie? Pop? Folk? Maybe its all those things. But a whole lot more.
