El Born - You Made Me" July 7th 2014.

“El Born is about new beginnings," says the bands frontman and songwriter Si Connelly.

With Coldplay already name checking the lead track “1982” off the band’s album - produced by Brit winning producer Chris Potter and Grammy winning Dom Morley – Si Connelly & keyboardist Hils believe they have created something truly original.

The London-based band recently completed their debut album. It contains 11 emotionally charged songs, each showcasing stunning vocals. Chris Potter (producer of Verve’s Urban Hymns) and Dom Morley (Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black) were so keen to produce the album – they did it for no upfront fee.

During a period of living in his car in London and delivering sandwiches to make a living, Si put out an advert for band members. “I then emailed Chris Potter" he says, "and asked him if he'd be interested in producing the record. He agreed!
He loved the songs and brought in Dom Morley.
We recorded the album at Monnow Valley in Wales. We mixed in downtime at Metropolis studios in Chiswick, grabbing a few hours whenever and wherever we could.”

The band are named after the bohemian El Born district of Barcelona. A beautiful piece of abstract artwork (the aptly titled “Long Time Coming”, by Michel Keck) reminded Si of the area and inspired him to name his band after it. Further inspired he contacted Michel Keck directly and, once she'd heard the music, told him El Born could use her paintings as their artwork.

Musically speaking, the band sit somewhere in the field of alternative rock, with a widescreen, un-pasteurized sort of a sound. Pop songs with testosterone and an adrenalin rush. Kind of John Mayer meets Jack White meets Ryan Adams with a box of grenades. But the dynamic twists, classically infused keyboard fills and rolling bass are always there to stop the songs festering for too long on the purely dark side.

Lyrically, there's a heavy nod towards songwriter Si's relationship with his past. People, places, love, hate, abandonment, burning your house down: the usual stuff. A past, which, it seems he variously, wants to escape, return to, forget and repeat. A past seen through a kaleidoscope, which won’t stop turning and is now being squeezed through the prism of the present. It’s these conflicts and collisions that create the glorious tensions in the lyrics and the wild-eyed edginess in the delivery.

The band were thrilled at the organic success of their debut single “1982”. Hils says: “A fan made a video to the track and very soon we had 10,000 views in 8 days and it just kept rolling. Eventually we got to 40,000 views. So we made the track available on our own label Kangaroo Zoo. We got a sync on the TV drama Monroe, starring James Nesbitt, and then Coldplay said they loved the video and the song and put it up on their website. At that point we had about 200,000 views and it charted at 19 in the iTunes chart.”
The band released their debut EP "Kangaroo EP" early in 2014 to great success and have been touring non-stop.
Now, with everything in place El Born are finally looking forward to coming into the world.

ROBERT BEARSBY

“I wasn’t scared about sleeping rough, but I did need to eat. So I picked up my guitar, sat down at the side of the road and I sang to anyone who would listen to me. Three months later I had made enough money to get back home to England and I felt like if I could do that. I could do anything.” Robert Bearsby

That was less than two years ago. Now a rising star of the UK music scene, Robert Bearsby is on the cusp of a major breakthrough. Already a firm favourite of Absolute Radio DJs and widespread adulation from the ultra cool new music station Jemm Radio with his last two singles, Roberts short career so far has been nothing short of a whirlwind of media.

“Picked by our head of music, there is no higher endorsement than that!”
Sarah Champion, Absolute Radio

“One of the strongest solo artists on the scene for a very long time!”
Wynona Grant, Fortitude Magazine.

“A great performer with a voice you want to keep listening to, I can’t wait to watch and hear his career.” - Dominic King, BBC Radio Kent

“Great sound... Great Vocal.” - Ben Woodcock, Muzu.tv

“A truly exceptional artist.”  - Nicole Symone, OnTheComeUpTV

Since releasing his very first single 'Late Nights & Traffic Lights in September 2013 Robert has debuted at No. 45 in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Chart, sold out his EP launch and been selected by the head of music at Absolute Radio as their emerging icon of the week. Robert has also played live on BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Bristol and BBC Radio London as well as appearing in a number of printed publications and online blogs including Fortitude Magazine, Limelight Magazine, OnTheComeUpTV and Music Mafia Magazine.

Topman recently selected Robert’s new music video to be a part of their in store video jukebox and he has just been selected by BBC Kent Introducing to feature and play live on their Saturday night show. Robert has also received airplay on BBC Radio Leeds, Covent Garden Radio, Vixen 101, ABC Radio, Riviera FM, Radio Tircoed, Jemm 2 Radio, Sommer Valley FM, Castle FM, Phonic Fm and Pulse98.

JULES RENDELL

Jules Rendell is a soulful young London based artist with vocals reminiscent to those of Minnie Ripperton and a poetic, soulful way with words.

Her debut EP The Lotus Bloom is a stunning piece of work musically and artistically featuring the wonderful creative design work of Naomi Jackson on the cover. Already receiving critical plaudits, BBC London's Robert Elms got in touch to invite Jules to play live on his show earlier this summer.

You can hear the EP in full at :

https://soundcloud.com/julesrendell/sets/the-lotusbloom-ep/s-RgoIJ

After emerging from The Royal Northern College of Music, Jules went on to rack up an impressive list of credits, singing with Gorillaz at Manchester Opera House as part of the Manchester International Festival and backing artists such as Keane, Beverley Knight, Aled Jones to name just a few, she’s even lended her vocals to a Nicole Scherzinger single.

Jules is an accomplished live performer too having already graced the stage at venues such as O2 Islington, XOYO, Manchester Academy, The Secret Garden Party, and jazz venues such as Boisdale, The Pheasantry and Pizza Express Jazz Club. Just for good measure, she recently sold out London's Hippodrome Casino for the live launch of the Lotus Bloom EP.

Birmingham-born Rendell has now made her home in London, where she’s been keeping some very good company indeed. Not only has Goz-i-am (Emeli Sande, Gloria Gaynor, Candi Staton and Beverly Knight) produced her EP, The Lotus Bloom sees Jules joined by a group of world-class musicians including: Emily Holligan: vocals (Plan B, Stevie Wonder) Rob Barron keys (Soweto Kinch, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Al Jarreau.) Lizzie Deane (Boy George, Pee Wee Ellis, Mica Paris, Belinda Carlisle) Jo Phillpotts: bass (Carleen Anderson, Nitin Sawhney, Marcella Detroit.) Feranmi Oguns: drums (The Outlanders.)

Holly Johnson announces 'Europa'
First new album in 15 years released September 29
Single: 'Follow Your Heart' out July 27
Live: UK Tour announced for October
Holly Johnson has today announced details of his first new album in fifteen years. 'Europa' will be released on September 29 via his Pleasuredome label, the first taster of which, 'Follow Your Heart', premieres today, and is available to pre-order on iTunes from midnight tonight. A digital EP, featuring one of the final remixes by Frankie Knuckles (and Eric Kupper), is out July 27 alongside a limited-edition coloured vinyl. Surrounding the launch of 'Europa', the Frankie Goes to Hollywood front-man will also embark on his first solo tour - the last being with FGTH in 1987 - featuring a London show at Indigo2 on October 28. Further single and live plans will be unveiled shortly.
'Europa' is a collection of joyful and optimistic songs from one of the most unique personalities in pop: it's a celebration of love and enjoying life in the moment, while you can. The album arrives exactly thirty years since Frankie Goes To Hollywood released their debut record 'Welcome To The Pleasuredome', featuring the iconic, millions-selling 'Relax' (famously banned by the BBC), 'Two Tribes' (which spent nine weeks at number 1) and 'The Power of Love' (a cover of which reached number 1 again just last year).
In 1999, after releasing his third solo album, 'Soulstream', and needing a break from the music industry, Holly did what he'd intended to do before Frankie took off: he enrolled in art school. This completed a circle which began in 1983, when he had to turn down a place at Liverpool Art College because of 'Relax' becoming a hit. Sixteen years later, Holly was invited to attend The Royal College of Art, where he painted and exhibited for four years and had his work repeatedly shown at the likes of the Royal Academy Summer Show and Tate Liverpool. He was lured back to music part-time in 2009, when Universal released a Frankie Goes to Hollywood Greatest Hits, though his distinctive voice was last heard on the 2012 Christmas number 1, The Justice Collective's 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother'. At the occasional live dates in-between, Johnson realised "that I'd forgotten how much physical pleasure I got from singing my own sings. This is my teenage dream come true. I started to think, why did I ever stop?" Then, in 2012, Holly met the producer Mark Ralph whilst recording with Raf from The 2 Bears, who had worked with the likes of Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand, and recently completed the Clean Bandit album. The pair hit it off, and set about finessing the songs that would form Johnson's new album. "I'd pile my vintage synths into the back of the car, head over to Mark's place, and we'd be up half the night making this record.'
The result, 'Europa', is a euphoric, often-electronic-led return, celebrating love, dance...and chronicling exactly what Holly Johnson has been up to these last fifteen years. The title track began life with Vangelis in Paris over a decade ago, where Johnson - a 'Blade Runner' obsessive - teamed up with the legendary composer in an underground studio; a converted concrete bunker on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, which had been originally designed for Hitler's occupation. Some twenty four years later, Holly and Vangelis, together with long-time collaborator Mark Ralph, finally finished it off. Elsewhere, the record features contributions from Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera, Vini Reilly of Durutti Column, and the late, great Frankie Knuckles, remixing first single 'Follow Your Heart' alongside house legend Eric Kupper (Knuckles also remixed Holly's first ever solo single, 1989's 'Love Train'). 'Follow Your Heart' is about that need to give yourself a push, on an album full of positivity - much to the surprise of its writer. "I really am the archetypal miseryguts," says Holly. "The songs are full of encouragement because really I'm singing to myself, to get rid of that black dog and get me out my shell."
And so here he is - with a new album, tour, and a passion for the music that first transported him from 1960s, working-class Liverpool to one of the pop stars of his generation. Holly Johnson describes 'Europa' as "a kind of retrospective of me as a songwriter. It's the product of a life in pop music. And one thing you learn is that, every time you make a record, it might be the last one. So you'd better make it good, you'd better make it positive, and you'd better enjoy it."
